What is this?
At least to start, this is a blog. I hedge that statement because I don’t want to set any constraints on the topics I’ll cover, or the type of content that may land here.
This site has no concrete plan or roadmap. Too many times in the past I’ve used excessive “planning” or “preparation” as a thinly veiled guise for procrastination. The goal here is to prioritize (high quality) output. In other words: create one thing at a time, and we’ll see where it leads.
I realize that description couldn’t possibly be less informative. To help get a sense of what this may become, below are several sites that inspired me to stand this up:
The below essays are some more specific examples of the types of writing I foresee myself trying to emulate and use as inspiration. If this seems interesting to you, stick around. If it’s too long winded, abstract, and/or pretentious… honestly, that’s fair.
Part of the rationale for creating this as a separate space (i.e., not spamming this stuff on social media) was the hunch that most people probably don’t want abstract musings about existential meaning or how we define success all over their timeline.
By keeping all of the “serious” stuff here, the people who actually may want to engage with it know where it is, and the rest of my timeline can live their lives in peace.
why should you care?
Long story short, you probably don’t have a reason to. And that’s ok, we can still be friends. I probably wouldn’t keep close tabs on my random friend’s passion project blog either.
That being said, I’m going to do my best to make sure anything that ultimately gets published here is some combination of:
Insightful - I’d like to find a fresh perspective that either challenges the way you think or deepens your understanding on a given topic
Interesting - Not sure how well dry humor translates via text, but I’ll do my best to keep things as entertaining as possible
Practical - I’ll plan to connect whatever we’re talking about back to concrete examples and implications in my life, hopefully making it more applicable to yours
I’d truly appreciate any thoughts, feedback, suggestions, book recommendations, interesting articles, or any other input you may have. You can reach out via the aptly titled “Reach Out” page, or directly at the email at the bottom of the page.
Two more requests of you if you’re feeling generous:
If you’d be interested in joining a potential e-mail list notifying you when I post a new essay, let me know. Genuine request, as I’m only going to try to figure out how to do that if there’s actually interest. Promise I won’t spam you.
If something is broken or weird on the website, please tell me that as well. I’m figuring this out as I go, so it’s definitely going to happen.
Why am i doing this?
This is a question I’ve struggled with for a minute. It feels inherently pretentious and self-righteous to think that anything I’d create is really worth releasing to the public. To an extent, it probably is.
But at the end of the day, it boils down to this for me: independently of if my writing is “good” or gets any attention at all, there are benefits to me trying this thing out and leaning in to my creative side.
I’m thinking about potential benefits through two lenses: creativity and practicality.
Creativity
At the start of 2025, I set an explicit goal to become a more creative person. To make that a reality, I actually need to… create things. Creating a public website is a tangible way of:
Holding myself accountable for breaking out of the “planning” phase and actually producing outputs
Peer pressuring myself into further refining my thinking, and ensuring that anything I publish publicly is something I’m proud to put my name behind
Practicality
The reality is that in creating a website dedicated to writing, I’ll probably pick up some pretty useful skills along the way. First example: I had to figure out how to set up this landing page.
Over time, hopefully I’ll…
Become a better writer
Improve the design and UX of this site
Potentially become a web analytics guru
While the creative piece is the primary driver, the practical piece helps sweeten the deal.
As I mentioned above, there’s really no tangible plan for this site. I don’t know what this ends up becoming, but my gut is telling me this is a first step in the right direction.
